Celiac disease (CD) is a common disorder that includes classical gastrointestinal symptoms of chronic diarrhea and weight loss, and other symptoms such as anemia (low blood cell counts), osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) and neurological abnormalities such as ataxia (problems with balance and walking). Laboratory tests for diagnosing CD are relatively reliable and easy to obtain. Anti-tTG IGA antibodies (these are the auto-immune antibodies that cause CD) are relatively good for initial screening while anti-EMA IgA antibodies is a good confirmatory test. Gliadin peptide antibodies (DGP) are especially good in children younger than 3 and in IgA deficient individuals.
