Peanut Allergy

There has been promising new work on a oral immunotherapy or desensitization to peanuts. In the initial studies patients started with a very low level of peanut protein, in a very controlled fashion. Initial amounts were equal to about 1/1,000 of a peanut. Around 20% of patients were not able to tolerate the procedure but the others were able to eventually consume large amounts of peanuts. The initial reports from the investigators who performed this study also included immunologic tests that confirmed a potential for prolonged benefit. This work is preliminary and not ready for the general public. However, this investigational report shows that there may be hope for a cure in the future. If you or a loved one has peanut allergy the standard now is strict avoidance and the use of epipen at times of reactions from accidental exposure.
